4. Lenovo Legion 5 Pro
Product details
Brand | Lenovo |
Series | Legion 5 15 Gaming Laptop |
Screen Size | 15.6 |
Color | Phantom Blue |
Hard Disk Size | 512 GB |
CPU Model | Ryzen 7 |
Ram Memory Installed Size | 16 GB |
Operating System | Windows 10 Home |
Card Description | Dedicated |
Graphics Coprocessor | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti |
Lenovo has never released a better gaming laptop than the Legion 5 Pro. Priced at less than $2,000, it provides strong performance and a sleek design. This monitor has no problems in any game we tried at its native resolution of 2560×1600. Add to this the 165Hz refresh rate, and the legion 5 Pro will be more than able to handle anything you throw at it.
Beyond how it performs, one of the best things about the Legion 5 Pro is its 16:10 screen. As its unique shape on the gaming laptop market, 16:10 screens allow you to multi-task if you plan to use the Legion 5 Pro for work. The keyboard is also pleasant to use, with a generous 1.5mm of key travel, as well as full four-zone programmable backlighting.
Updating any gaming laptop as RAM and storage demands increase is possible. For the Legion 5, there are two SODIMM slots for up to 64GB of DDR5 memory, and there are two M.2 PCIe x4 slots for gen 4 SSDs. Also on the interior you will find the AMD Ryzen 7 6800H and its accompanying battery, which lasts for 15 hours and 13 minutes of web browsing or 9 hours and 22 minutes of video playback in tandem. Now we conducted the battery tests with the Windows Better Performance mode turned on, screen brightness set to 120 nits, and all other programs, including other browser and email apps, turned off.
The main disadvantage of the Legion is its battery life: we managed only about four and a half hours of continuous use. While it’s not the worst we’ve seen from a gaming laptop, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the G15. But it does charge incredibly fast, with the 300W power brick it comes with. The Legion might be better for people on the go as opposed to the G15.
5. MSI GE76 Raider

6. Alienware M15 R7
Product details
Brand | Alienware |
Series | Alienware m15 R7 |
Screen Size | 15.6 Inches |
Color | Black |
Hard Disk Size | 512 GB |
CPU Model | Core i7 Family |
Ram Memory Installed Size | 16 GB |
Operating System | Windows 11 Home |
Card Description | RTX 3060 |
Graphics Coprocessor | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 |
The Alienware M15 R7 is bringing the Alienware laptops of yesteryear into modernity with Intel’s new processors and NVIDIA’s high-performance graphics cards. Although prices are currently on the high side, since this version offers new features not available on the earlier model, it might be worth the splurge.
In our benchmarks and stress tests, our test unit was easily sailing through our benchmarks and stress testing. It came with an i7-12700H processor and an RTX 3070 Ti graphics card. The beast held up to heavy games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and Metro Exodus, capturing 76fps in RDR2 on Ultra settings and 72fps in Metro Exodus on maximum settings.
In any case, it’s worth noting that this machine is built exclusively to provide power. It’s an unusually heavy machine – the charger alone is almost as long as the keyboard. This isn’t going to be a gaming laptop you’ll be able to throw into a backpack – and those fans certainly can scream! But if you’re looking for an all-rounder that can compete with machines much more expensive, these sacrifices are easy to accept.
Due to the recently launched X-series, Alienware’s M-series now falls in the middle of its range, making the Alienware M15 R7 more affordable than its predecessor. There are cheaper machines out there, but without Alienware’s pedigree. For most players, this laptop offers great performance at a great price, and makes few sacrifices in order to get there. In terms of price and market reach, this is the best Alienware gaming laptop on paper.
Considering that the M-series has recently been launched, it is now situated in the middle of Alienware’s product range. And it is more affordable as a result, being less expensive than the older M15. There are cheaper laptops out there, but you wouldn’t get Alienware’s warranty and quality. In summary, for a gaming laptop at this price and with these specs, this is the best available from Alienware, both on paper and in real life.

The laptop also includes 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, and a single USB Type-C port. It’s a great choice for those looking for an affordable gaming laptop that doesn’t skimp on performance.
If you’re looking to grab an RTX 30-Series card but don’t want to break too far past $1,000 / £1,000, the Asus TUF Dash F15 is going to be your best bet. In our testing, we found this budget-friendly machine to charge through even some of the more demanding titles as if it sat in a much higher price bracket – despite the weaker 4-core i7-11370H processor at the helm. Plus, you’re still getting the super slimline form factor that has proven so popular over the last couple of years.

The ASUS VivoBook 15 (X505Z) has narrow bezel that lets you watch movies without any distractions, as well as gives you plenty of room for the keyboard. The keys are big and well spaced, as is the layout. Travel on the keys is also a consideration. Lack of a light to indicate when the Caps Lock is turned on is a small detail that detracts from the quality of the keyboard. All things considered, typing is quite easy and comfortable. The touchpad is fairly responsive and easy to use.

10. Acer Nitro 5
Product details
Brand | Acer |
Series | Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55-53E5 |
Screen Size | 15.6 Inches |
Color | Black |
Hard Disk Size | 256 GB |
CPU Model | Core i5 |
Ram Memory Installed Size | 8 GB |
Operating System | Windows 11 Home |
Special Feature | Backlit |
Card Description | Dedicated |
If you’re looking for the best gaming laptop under $1,000, then the Acer Nitro 5 AN515 is an excellent choice. This gaming laptop has all the power you need to play games with ease and speed, and it comes at an affordable price. It features a 9th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display.
The Acer Nitro 5 AN515 also has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics, 1TB of storage, and Windows 10 Home pre-installed. This laptop is capable of playing some of the latest titles at medium settings without any issues. The battery life is great for a gaming laptop and can last up to 8 hours on a single charge. The Acer Nitro 5 AN515 is definitely one of the best gaming laptops under $1,000.
This, of course, has a performance advantage when you look at the results in the game: 86fps on high settings with the new AMD Ryzen 5800H and the Nvidia RTX 3060, and only 77fps on ultra settings. The SSD could be a bit faster, but it shouldn’t be a problem. In most games, the frame rate will exceed 60fps at maximum settings, and ray-tracing is also an option, though it requires additional resources.
Although the display is somewhat dull compared to other laptops in the same price range, and the battery life isn’t great, it doesn’t seem like a major compromise, since the display has a good refresh rate of 144Hz. By sacrificing nice-to-have features, the RTX 3060 Nitro 5 offers some impressive components at a budget price. There’s no frills with this gaming laptop, so if you just want raw power, you’ll like it.
Despite the lackluster screen and unimpressive battery life, considering the price point, these feel like fair tradeoffs, particularly since the display remains at an excellent 144Hz refresh rate. Affordably priced at $1,129 (other models range from $700 to $2,100), the RTX 3060 Nitro 5 packs a lot of impressive components while sacrificing some nice-to-have features. Because of that, it’s perfect for people who want raw power without all the extras that can make gaming laptops more expensive.
FAQ
Q. How much RAM do I need in a gaming laptop?
Random access memory (RAM) is the memory a computer uses to store data related to active tasks. While adding more RAM won’t make your computer faster, it will enable it to handle more tasks simultaneously, making your experience smoother and more responsive. While some low-end gaming laptops ship with 4GB or 8GB of RAM, for an optimal gaming experience, we recommend buying one with a minimum of 16GB of RAM.
Can I play virtual reality (VR) games on a gaming laptop?
Yes, you can do this with additional hardware. Virtual reality games can be installed and run from any Windows-based machine, and they require special equipment like VR goggles and hand controllers (sold separately). Before investing in a VR kit, make sure your gaming laptop meets the technical requirements of the VR games you want to play.
Q. Does Apple make a gaming laptop?
While many video game developers port their most popular titles to Apple’s macOS operating system, Apple does not have a laptop that’s designed specifically for gaming. However, most Apple laptops have competent GPUs that can deliver an average gaming experience. If you’re more than a casual gamer, stick with Windows. Many of the most popular gaming titles are PC exclusives.
Are high refresh rate panels worth it for laptops?
We love high refresh rate screens here, and while you cannot guarantee your RTX 3060 will deliver 300 fps in the latest games, you’ll still see a benefit in general look and feel running a 300Hz display.
Where are the laptops with AMD graphics cards?
Your guess is as good as ours. A few gaming laptop SKUs offered the RX 5000-series cards, but they were thin on the ground. But AMD has promised RX 6000, Big Navi mobile GPUs will be on their way to gaming laptops in the first half of this year, but so far we haven’t seen them in the labs.
Do you need a gaming laptop with an RTX GPU?
Picking up one of the latest Nvidia GPUs in your gaming laptop doesn’t need to be a costly affair – RTX 3050 machines have been spotted at prices that would previously have sat on older GTX models. Nvidia’s RTX chips are currently in their 30-Series, one up from the 20-Series launched last year, and you’ll find the vast majority of gaming laptops on the shelves are sporting them. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need one if you’re just playing smaller games on a budget, in which case a GTX 1650 is still a worthy consideration. However, the bottom line is if you’re buying a gaming laptop today, the choices on offer will revolve around the RTX 30-Series line.
Can you spend under $1000 on a gaming laptop?
It’s absolutely possible to spend less than $1,000 and still pick up one of the best gaming laptops on the market. Our favorite models under this price range are the Dell G15 and the Asus TUF Dash F15, though the Acer Nitro 5 also offers plenty of value in its cheaper configurations as well. You might be dropping down to 8GB of RAM or a cheaper version of an Intel processor, but if you’re playing lighter titles or you’re not fussed about the latest and greatest in performance there are plenty of options out there.
Which brand is best for gaming laptops?
Overall, the best gaming laptop brands include Razer, Alienware, MSI, Asus and Acer. However, there are a number of companies all competing for the title right now, from budget-oriented developers to high-end industry staples. Finding the best gaming laptop brand, however, may come down to how much you’re willing to pay and how much you value extra features like mechanical keyboards and RGB lighting in your chassis. Alienware, for example, produces some incredible machines with these features built in, but at a significant premium – whereas Acer’s machines tend to be more conservative in their builds but offer reduced prices.
Conclusion
Speaking of brute force, the Sager NP9262 is a strong notebook, powering through our gaming benchmarks at a speed that rivals many of the laptops currently available. With frame rates that are significantly better than those found on many other models, it truly stands apart from the rest of the competition. Individuals looking for a laptop geared specifically towards portable gaming will likely appreciate all of the great features the Sager NP9262 has to offer. If you prefer more portable laptops, then you will be satisfied with the Dell M1730 as well.
The only downside is that the Dell M1730 still only offers dual-core processors and 8800M GTX SLI graphics cards instead of 9800M GT SLI or the powerful 9800M GT SLI and quad-core processor of the NP9262. Since both have relatively similar size and prices are the same, it’ll come down to performance with more power preferring the NP9262.
The In many ways, the Alienware m15x is the most interesting notebook we’ve tested. Unlike other 15.4″ notebooks we’ve tested, this one offers great gaming performance, and its Smart Bay lets us install an additional battery instead of an optical drive.
While we’d prefer not to have to reboot to switch between discrete and integrated graphics, it’s still better than not being able to save power and extend battery life. Our labs expect to see a few more notebooks that support Alienware’s BinaryGFX Centrino 2 in the next month, and we’re excited to see the differences. Unfortunately, the M15x does not seem as durable as we would like, and given the price, this is something that needs to be addressed.
We like the Sager NP9262’s power and the Alienware m15x’s interesting features, but many people find the Gateway P-7811’s overall performance and convenience the best. Alienware’s performance is comparable to the m15x in gaming, and its battery life is better in most cases.
Our biggest concern with the P-7811 is its instability. We have not yet received a solution to the periodic lockups we’ve encountered. For under $1500, however, only the instability can be considered a negative. Besides that, the chassis feels bulkier than it needs to be – we would prefer a thicker laptop instead of the protruding battery – and LCD quality isn’t quite as good as competing laptops.
Our article will be updated once we receive a solution. Until then, the P-173XL (the replacement of the P-171XL) is a reasonable alternative to the P-7811.
